The Shacks. Travis Bretzer. Bane's World. Here are three Indie Rock bands that have released really good songs this year. These bands all have respectable followings but still, not everyone has heard their music. Maybe you have already heard some of their tracks, but if not, allow this to be an opportunity to discover some new quality music.
Dreamy. Surreal. Beautiful. Based out of New York City, Max Shrager and Shannon Wise make up The Shacks, a band whose discography will not disappoint you. They seem to be doing everything right, and then some. Between the charming lyrics, ethereal vocals, and handsome guitar riffs, Shrager and Wise form a true power duo. With great songs such as “Orchids”, “Strange Boy” and last week’s release “Audrey (Spending All My Time With You)”, The Shacks are definitely worth listening to.
Some compare Travis Bretzer to Mac Demarco. They are both from Edmonton, Canada, and at times have a similar, easygoing, nonchalant rock sound, with fun, earnest, and relaxed vocals, but overall, I am not sure how accurate this comparison is. Bretzer has released four albums since 2010, with his most recent coming out this year, “Bubble Gum”, which features memorable tracks such as “Evergreen”, “History Repeats”, and “Holy Ghost”, with light, sandy vocals and catchy melodies definitely worthy of grooving to. The album ends with a peaceful track, “A Song For Rashy”, void of vocals, leaving the listener in a peaceful, nostalgic state. Travis is creating good music and I am excited to see where he goes next.
A tasteful amount of synths, a laid back attitude, and a handful of insightful artistic choices are what make Shane Blanchard, the singer/songwriter, guitarist, and producer of Bane’s World stand out. You will feel good when listening to his music. In 2016 he released his EP titled “Drowsy” and this year he put out his single, “You Say I’m In Love”. Later this month Blanchard will be performing with the likes of Tyler The Creator, BROCKHAMPTON, Steve Lacey, and Taco. He is definitely on the come up. Watch out. Stay posted.
